"The Makings of a Great Teacher"

Background

Rick Jensen learned sign language while “hanging out with friends” at Utah State University.  That knowledge came in handy when he married an ASL/English interpreter and later became one himself.  Rick was hired as a seminary teacher and moved to St. George, UT where he has lived for 28 years.  He has since continued to “hang out with Deaf friends” while serving as the ASL Branch president of the Red Cliffs branch (2008 – 2012).  During that time, Rick taught both hearing and Deaf seminary and institute classes.  In 2021, Seminaries and Institutes (S&I) reformatted their classroom options for Deaf students and selected Rick to be the ASL Coordinator and Advisor for North America and Canada.  His current responsibilities include working with and training an incredible team of Deaf teachers who teach youth and YSA all over the nation.  He has taught and directed sessions at EFY, FSY, and ASL FSY.  As a member of the admin team on the church’s ASL Board of Accessibility, he contributes to the ASL Board of Education for S&I and the Missionary sub committees. He is married to Wendy Westra Jensen and together they have 7 outstanding children.
